Deezer music service to launch in US in 2014

French music streaming service avoided US because of intense competition

Paris-based Deezer will finally offer its music-streaming service in the United States. The service, which has launched in a number of other countries including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and across Europe, will be available to use in the US sometime next year, though the company is reluctant to provide a final launch date until it can find another company to provide extra support.

Confirmed by co-founder and CTO Daniel Marhely to the AFP, the company has been avoiding the United States due to the intense competition between services, such as Pandora and Spotify. "We have the same catalog, the same price. We should therefore differentiate the product. We must bring something more," said Marhely, suggesting that the company could do something similar to its deal with Orange in France, which provides access to the service to their customers as part of an offer.

Though it could work with a US partner to quickly gain customers, it currently appears to be doing well enough on its own, and could possibly launch without any external aid. Techcrunch reports that Deezer currently has around 5 million paid subscribers, and raised $130 million round of funding last year to help expand internationally.
