SIM-free iPhone 5s hits US; iPad mini gets regional carriers

updated 11:39 am EST, Fri November 22, 2013

Apple Stores now selling Mini to walk-in shoppers

Apple's US online storefront has begun selling SIM-free unlocked models of the iPhone 5s. Units are currently shipping in 1 to 2 weeks. T-Mobile models are also unlocked, and shipping in just 3 to 5 days, but going with the SIM-free option may save some hassle for people choosing AT&T or a pre-paid GSM carrier.

3G/4G models of the Retina iPad mini, meanwhile, are now appearing for sale at regional US carriers. Bluegrass Cellular is selling 16, 32, and 64GB models, which can be paid for outright or over the course of 12 months, with the option of trading in and upgrading to a new device after the term is up. Those payment plans are only available at retail and cost $26.50 per month for 16GB, $31.50 for 32GB, and $36.50 for 64GB. Only the space gray color appears to be on sale. Another regional, C Spire, says it will start selling the Mini within the next week.

9to5Mac adds that Apple has finally begun selling the Retina Mini to walk-in customers at its US stores. Until today, orders have been limited to online purchases, whether delivered or claimed through Personal Pickup. The change could signal slightly better inventories, although the tablet is still believed to be in much shorter supply than the iPad Air.
