Nokia to clear out Espoo HQ for Microsoft handover

updated 04:40 pm EST, Thu November 21, 2013

Nokia will be moving to nearby building from old HQ

As part of the deal that sold off its mobile operations, Nokia will also be handing over its massive headquarters in Espoo, Finland, to Microsoft. TechCrunch reported on Thursday that Nokia is "quietly preparing to move out" of its Espoo headquarters, with Microsoft taking over the facility when the deal as the deal is completed over the next few months. The staff remaining with Nokia, though, won't be moving too far away, as the company will relocate to a building nearby in Karaportti.

Nokia actually sold its headquarters last year in the midst of ongoing financial struggles. The phone maker then leased those facilities and maintained occupancy within them.

Some 32,000 Nokia staff will be transferring over to Microsoft when the deal is completed. Many of those personnel are based within the Espoo facility, and both Nokia and Microsoft have said that they will remain there.

"We have no significant plans to shift around the world where work is done. We want it done where it is done today," outgoing Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer said at the time of the acquisition's announcement. [Image via RamaReddy Vogireddy]
