New 4.9-inch iPhone in field testing, report claims

updated 10:59 am EST, Thu November 21, 2013

No word on curved glass

Apple has started field testing of a new iPhone with a 4.9-inch display, says Chinese site C Technology. The site doesn't have any additional information, but the claim is consistent with numerous reports suggesting that Apple has been experimenting with larger iPhone displays. A recent Mac Fan story specifically suggested that Apple wants a 5-inch, 1080p display. A Bloomberg piece hinted at the possibility of curved glass, and not one but two models with bigger screens.

For Apple, upgrading to a larger display may be essential. While the company has insisted on the value of being able to hold a phone one-handed, its competition has switched to screens measuring at least 4.5 inches, often closer to 5, and in some cases as big as 5.7 or even 6.3 inches. The iPhone 5s measures a far smaller 4 inches.

4.5-4.7 would be my preference. Those 5" Samsung and Nexus seem just too big. I liked the 4.7 the HTC One has.

I still think those mega-smartphones are highly overrated in terms of overall consumer preferences, but if that's what's necessary for Apple to increase iPhone sales then I'm all for it. If Apple still doesn't sell as many iPhones, then it's just a waste of time. Apple had better knock it out of the ballpark with some additional features or something to make it worthwhile. I doubt Apple's mega-iPhone would have anything that would give it an advantage over any Android mega-smartphone.
