Nokia Music rebranded as MixRadio, adds personalized mix option

Windows Phone app updated with new name, new look

Nokia has rebranded its music streaming service for Lumia smartphones, and has updated its Windows Phone app at the same time. Nokia MixRadio operates in a similar manner to the advertisement-free Nokia Music service it is replacing, this time with a greater emphasis on the downloadable mixes, as well as introducing a personalized mix.

"Play Me" will use the listener's music profile, reports WPCentral, with an algorithm defining songs for a mix, though this can be refined by giving a "Thumbs Up" or "Thumbs Down" to tracks. The new app also allows users to share mixes with friends over Facebook and Twitter, as well as via text message and e-mail, and the app as a whole has a new look that is said to be easier to use.

The rest of the app is pretty much the same as the original. Over 150 playlists are generated by Nokia "mixologists," and users can download up to four mixes, with each playlist consisting of hours of music that can be listened to offline. The $3.99 premium service allows for unlimited skips of tracks, and allows for an unlimited number of mixes to be downloaded from the service.

Rumors earlier this week suggested that Nokia Music would be expanding to multiple platforms, with Windows 8, 8.1, RT, Android, and iOS versions of the app set to launch in the future. Considering the recent acceptance of Microsoft's offer by Nokia shareholders, Nokia MixRadio could remain a Lumia and Windows Phone product for a while longer.
