Rumor: Nintendo working on Android tablet for educational games

Twitter account of Nintendo engineer hints at possible tablet

Nintendo could be working on its own Android tablet, according to a report. The game console producer is said to be in the process of making a tablet specifically for educational games, something which will be a marked departure from Nintendo's existing hand-held devices, such as the Nintendo 2DS, Nintendo 3DS, and the gamepad used on the Wii U console.

Tweets from Nintendo of America engineer Nando Monterazo collected by Nintendo Everything states he was working on a tablet system that ran on a "fully modified" version of Android, and was testing the communication aspects of "educational games that will be shared between the kids using the tablet." The posts on Twitter have since been removed, but other postings by Monterazo mention that the educational games would feature Nintendo characters, and that older Nintendo games would not be emulated and available to play on the device.

Nintendo refused to pass comment on the rumor to VentureBeat, and also refused to confirm whether or not Monterazo was employed by the company.

A potential tablet release from Nintendo could be a way forward for the company, following its struggling Wii U console sales. The latest financial results showed it as posting just $6.14 million in profit for the six month period ending September 30th, with the 160,000 worldwide Wii U sales for the last quarter being eclipsed by the 210,000 Wii sales in the same period. Nintendo still enjoys decent portable device sales, with the 3DS selling 1.4 million units in the quarter, but even this is lower than the same period last year.
