Nominet will offer .uk domain registrations from summer 2014

updated 11:28 am EST, Wed November 20, 2013

Shorter UK domain names to cost the same as existing registrations

Nominet, the domain registrar of the United Kingdom, will soon start offering shorter .uk suffixes to websites. The new address ending, set to become available from the summer of 2014, will bring the UK in line with other country-based suffixes, such as .fr for websites serving France, .de for Germany, and .ca for Canada.

Current domains offered in the United Kingdom have a longer ending, with .co.uk being the most common example alongside .org.uk, .net.uk, and .me.uk. The extra .uk domain names will be priced at £3.50 ($) per year for a single year registration, and £2.50 per year for multi-year versions, with the wholesale price being the same as that of current .co.uk registrations.

The registrar has already taken into account possible clashes between existing UK-based domain owners who could potentially want to register the .uk equivalent, by giving the first choice to .co.uk owners. Over ten million .uk addresses will be reserved for use by current matching UK registrations for a five-year period, with potential owners given five years to decide if they wish to use the extra domain name, before it gets turned over to general domain registrations.

The announcement comes a week after another UK-related domain change. GigaOm reports that ICANN has authorized the use of the generic top-level domain (gTLD) .london by the capital city. The city's promotional agency, London & Partners, will be offering domains with the suffix to entities with a London street address or an EU-registered trademark, with sales set to start in the spring.
