Motorola promises KitKat for 2012 Droid line

Moto X to be joined by Razr HD, Razr Maxx, more

Motorola surprised much of the tech world on Tuesday by revealing that the 2012 line of Droid devices would be receiving an update to Android 4.4 KitKat. The news came just a day after Android updates began rolling out for the Verizon model of the Moto X. The Google-owned manufacturer did not, however, give any information on the time frame for the new wave of updates.

Revealed last year by Google and Motorola, the Droid Razr HD, Droid Razr Maxx HD, and Droid Razr M were all Verizon phones that saw an update to Jelly Bean 4.1 soon after their release. Those devices will soon be able to run Android 4.4, which may run better on them than previous builds of Android, due to the emphasis Google put on developing KitKat to run on lower-power devices.

Also seeing the update will be the Electrify M and the Atrix HD. The news appears to be a realization of Motorola's promise to deliver quick updates to its devices. While Motorola reportedly gets no special treatment from its parent company Google, the manufacturer last year dedicated itself to using an almost pure version of Android as a basis for its devices.
