FreedomPop extends free and low-cost tiers to all Sprint phones

updated 10:59 am EST, Tue November 19, 2013

Will soon support older iPhones

Sprint-based wireless provider FreedomPop has announced that people with an existing Sprint phone can now activate a device on its service. The company offers extremely low-cost data plans, including a free tier with 500MB of data, 500 text messages, and 200 voice minutes. To get access, though, people previously had to pay $99 for an HTC Evo Design, a phone which is now largely obsolete.

The new support currently covers about 20 devices. FreedomPop says that within a few weeks, it will extend that support to the iPhone 4 and 4S. Eventually all Sprint phones will be supported, including even the iPhone 5s and 5c.

FreedomPop has meanwhile begun selling an HTC Evo 4G for $99 off-contract; the 4G is even older than the Design, however. Aside from that model, other newly-compatible phones include the HTC Evo 3D, the LG Optimus S, the Motorola Photon 4G, and Samsung's Epic 4G, Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy S III, Galaxy Nexus, Boost Prevail, and Nexus S.
