FiftyThree studios announces Pencil stylus

FiftyThree, the studio behind popular iPad sketching app Paper, have announced the availability of a new stylus the iPad. Dubbed "Pencil," the stylus mimics the look of its namesake, with a hardwood exterior molded to look like a architect's pencil. The new device will pair with FiftyThree's existing app, enabling a number of previously unavailable features for Paper.

Connecting Pencil to Paper will be as easy as "Kissing" the Pencil tip to the screen. The device will automatically pair with the app at that point. Once paired, Pencil enables palm rejection features, allowing the Paper app to ignore input from a user's hand while Pencil is touching the screen. The back end of the device also has an erase function, and it can be used in the same way one would use the eraser on a regular pencil.

Pencil also allows users to blend lines with their fingers. Users can smooth rough edges and blend colors directly on the page.

Pencil has a built-in rechargeable lithium-polymer battery, said to last about a month under normal use. That battery can be recharged on any USB port in under 90 minutes. The device also comes with trial versions of the Sketch, Outline, Write, Color, and Mixer in-app purchases for the Paper app.

Pencil will be available in two models. The lower-cost brushed aluminum Graphite model will sell for $50. For $60, though, customers can get the Walnut model, which is made out of sustainable hardwood. The Walnut model also has a built-in magnetic snap, allowing Pencil to adhere to an iPad or Smart Cover. Pencil is available for purchase at FiftyThree's site.
