ZTE launches Nubia Z5S, Z5S mini in China, global release expected

updated 07:55 am EST, Tue November 19, 2013

Both ZTE Nubia Z5S devices have 13-megapixel camera, LTE options

ZTE has launched a pair of updates to last year's Nubia Z5, with both smartphones to shop with LTE and 3G options, depending on carrier and region. The Nubia Z5S will have a five-inch 1080p IGZO display, while the smaller Nubia Z5S mini opts for a lower-resolution 720o, 4.7-inch display, and a drop in specification when compared to its full-sized counterpart.

The Nubia Z5S will shop with a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM and options for 16GB or 32Gb of storage, according to Unwired View. Running on Android 4.2.2, it has a 13-megapixel f/2.0 camera on the back with optical image stabilization, 4K video capture and the ability to record 120fps footage, along with a 5-megapixel front-facing version, dual-band Wi-Fi, an infrared remote, and a 2,300mAh battery.

The smaller Nubia Z5S mini uses a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, though with the same RAM and storage options. While it has a 13-megapixel camera on the back, it does not have the same OIS nor 4K footage capabilities as the non-mini handset, but does use Android 4.2.2 as well. It retains the same 7.6mm (0.3 inches) thickness as the Z5S, but manages to slim the weight down from 126g (4.4 ounces) to 120g (4.2 ounces).

ZTE will be shipping the full-sized Nubia Z5S for 1,999 yuan ($328) and 3,456 yuan ($567) for the 16GB 3G and 32GB LTE versions respectively, while the Nubia Z5S mini will sell for 1,499 yuan ($246) and 2,345 ($348) for the same options. While they will be initially available in China, both the ZTE Nubia Z5S and the mini model will be made available in the rest of the world in the coming months.
