Sprint tempts students with 12 months free service on smartphone sales

Best Buy, Sprint deal provides free talk, text, data to student subscribers

Sprint has started a promotion for students buying any new smartphones in the carrier's range over the holiday shopping period. Customers buying a device under the My Way Student promotion through Best Buy will receive up to 12 months of free cellular service, which the company states will save students up to $70 per month in costs.

The plan eligible students will receive includes free unlimited calls and texts, with 1GB of data, though this can be upgraded to unlimited data for $10 per month. The Verge reports that the offer is available to students enrolled at college, high school, or middle school, with the free period extended by referring others through the program.

While the offer will certainly help increase the carrier's subscriber numbers, there are some downsides to the plan. A $35 connection fee will apparently be charged at sign-up, and subscribers staying with the contract past the 12 months will end up paying the full $70 contract rate, or $80 per month with unlimited data. A second plan is also outlined for basic phones, but by providing the same talk and text benefits but with blocked data at $50 per month, it appears to not be as useful to students as the main smartphone-based offer itself.
