Harper's hits iOS with dedicated app for iPhone and iPad

Harper's joins the digital age with new iOS app

Harper's Magazine has taken a step into the new publishing paradigm, as the magazine released last week a new full app for Apple's iPhone and iPad. The move is a sizable one for the venerable publication, as it has in the past been fairly resistant to adopting new technologies. The development illustrates the growing importance of publications built for mobile devices, as Apple's can now boast that the oldest continuously published general-interest monthly in America now has a presence on its iOS platform.

Issues on the Harper's Magazine app will include all of the stories and art from the print edition of the magazine. Previous versions of Harper's app simply provided a PDF of the physical magazine, illustrating the publication's reluctance to step fully into the mobile era. Designed in collaboration with 29th Street Publishing, the new app has a focus on increasing readability, with native navigation elements included.

Subscriptions for the app are $22 per year. The 12 issues in a year's subscription arrive monthly, and a subscription grants full access to Harper's existing website. On that site are contained the magazine's entire archives, with more than 160 years of content. Individual issues are available at the cost of $6 a piece.

The new Harper's app is available as a free download in the App Store. The 32MB download requires an iPad, iPhone, or iPod running iOS 6.0 or higher. [via The Verge]

One major positive. All the issues that come out while you're a subscriber remain available through the app even if you let that subscription lapse. That's good news because it means Harpers is actually selling those issues rather than just leasing them. Someone at Harpers should create a collection of the best articles of the past 160 years, particularly the fiction, and offer that as a bonus with the app.
