Sony launches PlayStation 4 game console in United States

updated 06:50 am EST, Fri November 15, 2013

Sony PlayStation 4 lands in US, Europe to wait until November 29

Sony has launched the latest model in its line of game consoles in the United States. The PlayStation 4, on sale now before a later release on November 29 in Europe, is being priced by retailers at $400 for the console alone with a single touchpad-equipped DualShock 4 controller, though unlike the Xbox One and the Kinect, the Playstation 4 Eye is an optional purchase costing $60 on top.

The game-playing device has an eight-core x86 AMD Jaguar processor with 8GB of HDDR5 memory, and a 500GB hard disk for storage. Sporting a Blu-ray drive, the PlayStation 4 also has two USB 3.0 ports, gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, and HDMI out. It also touts the ability to play digital titles while it is still downloading them, thanks to Gaikai-based game streaming, though other online features, such as multiplayer, will require users to buy a PS Plus membership at $50 per year.

The launch itself has been marred with some significant issues. Some consoles sent to retailers have been reported as having HDMI and display issues, which the company claims to be isolated incidents, and is currently investigating. An online outcry has also forced the development team behind the console to reinstate MP3 and CD audio playback to the PlayStation 4, something that was available to use on the PlayStation 3, with a patch to address the issue expected shortly after launch.
