Sony adding MP3, CD playback in PS4 patch, updates companion app

updated 07:18 am EST, Wed November 13, 2013

PlayStation 4 development team working to add music playback after launch

Sony will be adding MP3 and CD audio playback to the PlayStation 4 in the future, following an online outcry. The change in plans by the console producer comes at the same time as it releases updated companion apps for the PlayStation 4 on both iOS and Android, ahead of its launch in the United States on November 15th.

Sony Computer Entertainment Shuhei Yoshida told Giant Bomb that the team behind the PS4 is producing a patch that will be applied sometime after its launch. Yoshida admitted that the team "didn't really think about MP3 and CD" during the PlayStation 4's development, and was apparently surprised by the online reaction. He also denied that leaving the two functions out of the console was an attempt to push players to use the subscription-based Music Unlimited service.

The new versions of the second-screen apps allow users to access the PlayStation Store for remote downloads of games or other content to the PlayStation 4, as well as the PlayStation Network for game alerts, messaging other players, and game notifications. The app replaces an earlier version made for the PlayStation 3.
