Netflix updates app with new UI, unified cross-platform experience

updated 05:24 am EST, Wed November 13, 2013

Image-heavy redesign adds more detail to show recommendations

Netflix has updated a number of its apps for smart TVs and set-top boxes, bringing them all under the same new uniform interface. The new UI heading to the Roku, Smart TV apps, Blu-Ray players, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 aims to provide more detail about potential shows, using large images and more personalized recommendations.

Highlighted shows and movies will display three large images and a short "more descriptive synopsis," along with personalized information for why the viewer will enjoy it sourced from the viewing history and their social network, writes the Netflix blog. An updated episode selector for TV shows provides images for each program, a broader episode-specific synopsis, and cast details.

The kid-friendly section uses a blue background with a "kids" label, so that parents can see it is being used from a distance. Netflix profile support for all devices, pointer navigation on Smart TVs, voice control on Xbox 360, and a redesigned post-play automatic series progression menu are also included.

The Netflix app will start to update across most platforms over the next few days, with a global rollout expected within two weeks. Some platforms, such as the Roku 2 and some Smart TVs, will see a longer delay.
