LG G Flex curved smartphone said to hit AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile

Curved smartphone will supposedly hit American carriers

LG's curving G Flex smartphone will not be limited to its native South Korea for distribution, according to a new rumor. Reliable mobile industry leaker @evleaks tweeted on Wednesday that the new phone with a novel form factor has been "confirmed" to be bound for AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. No dates have been announced for the curved smartphone's arrival, but given @evleaks' history of pronouncements, it may be some time in the near future.

Announced in late October, the G Flex features mid-range internals, with a Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM. It also features the same rear-oriented physical controls seen on LG's flagship G2 smartphone

The main differentiating factor for the phone, though, is of course its curved form factor. The G Flex has a vertically curving, six-inch 720p display. That curvature will presumably lead to a more natural fit when held to a user's face.

In addition to the curved display, the G Flex has a "self-healing" coating on its back. The manufacturer claims that the coating will allow the G Flex to repair hairline scratches "within minutes."

How attractive a curved smartphone will prove to consumers remains to be seen. LG's local rival Samsung has also revealed a device with a curving display. Notably, the two South Korean tech giants are also among the larger suppliers of display components to other tech manufacturers. Industry observers have noted that these curved smartphones may be a way of demonstrating that curved displays can now be mass-produced, possibly clearing the way for wider production of wearable technologies such as smartwatches.
