iTunes begins accepting Red Cross donations for Haiyan victims

updated 09:05 am EST, Tue November 12, 2013

Donations scale up to $200

Apple is now accepting donations for typhoon Haiyan relief through the iTunes Store. The full sum of each donation goes to the American Red Cross, and can range in value from $5 to $200. Apple does caution that because it's not sharing any personal information with the Red Cross, the latter party can't acknowledge donations. iTunes contributions are also ineligible for tax deductions.

The Philippines is in a severe state in the wake of Haiyan, one of the strongest storms ever recorded. The number of deaths is estimated to be in excess of 10,000, and many buildings have been completely destroyed. Some aid is reportedly beginning to reach survivors, but infrastructure is in such disarray that only a small portion is getting through.

Apple regularly opens up Red Cross donations for well-publicized disasters. Most recently, in 2012, the company accepted iTunes donations for victims of superstorm Sandy.
