Google adds Play Music streaming, $85 earbuds to Glass

updated 06:19 am EST, Tue November 12, 2013

Audio additions could attract music fans to Google Glass

Google will be adding the ability to play music through its Glass headwear, as the company makes a wider marketing push for the device. A new "listen to" option will be added to its vocal command lists, with users able to search for and stream the music through Google Play Music, as well as existing music playlists and song recommendations.

The New York Times reports that Glass already has a music recognition feature in a similar vein to Shazam, with Sound Search being able to identify a song being played nearby. The extra "listen to" command will let the wearer listen to the entire identified track, something which will extend the usefulness of Sound Search. The music streaming, while initially concentrating on Google Play Music, is expected to be opened up to other music providers in the future, while the single monaural earbud in the recently-revealed modified design will apparently be joined by a set of earbuds, priced at $85.

A new Glass promotional video has been launched, showing music producer Young Guru wearing the headgear as he runs some errands. During the clip, he uses Glass to translate into Spanish, identify a song being played in the restaurant, play the full version of the track, and sending a message to another person about that same song.
