GlobalFoundries to build Apple chips at Malta, NY plant, source says

updated 03:35 pm EST, Mon November 11, 2013

Samsung will allegedly help start production

GlobalFoundries is preparing to manufacture Apple A-series processors at its "Fab 8" plant in Malta, New York, a source tells local publication the Times Union. At present, every A-series chip is produced by Samsung at a factory in Austin, Texas. The source indicates that Samsung will help GlobalFoundries get started with the new project, but it's unknown if GlobalFoundries is being contracted by Samsung or directly by Apple.

In either case GlobalFoundries is expected to serve as a second source for A-series chips, rather than as a replacement for Samsung. For some time rumors have suggested that Apple wants to reduce its dependence on Samsung, in part by switching processor production over to TSMC. TSMC has yet to get into A-series work however, and Samsung is even moving into GlobalFoundries' new Technology Development Center, known as Fab 8.1 and located next to Fab 8.

I'm certain Apple wants to get as far away from Samsung as economically possible. As Samsung has historically used its 'favored vendor' status to get inside looks at Apple's product lines, I'm quite sure they're trying to make sure they want to continue being the sole provider for Apple's processors.

Apple had a serious issue with a similar mindset years ago when IBM and Motorola dropped out of the PPC partnership with Apple almost 10 years ago and I'm willing to wager that Apple is still trying to determine if bringing that phase of manufacturing in-house wouldn't be the better bet.
