Google barge statement dismisses floating data center rumors

Buildings on Google barges to be used to educate about new technology

Google has finally revealed a small amount of information relating to the construction on its mysterious barges, after considerable speculation. A spokesperson for the company advised that the barges, which have been spotted in San Francisco, Portland, and Maine, are being billed as an "interactive space where people can learn about new technology."

Initial reports that the barge held some sort of floating data center were effectively denied in the statement received by TechCrunch, which reads "Google Barge... A floating data center? A wild party boat? A barge housing the last remaining dinosaur? Sadly, none of the above."

One report suggested that the barge contained an invitation-only retail space with a dedicated "party deck" on the top. Though the statement discounts the party deck, the "interactive space" certainly sounds as if the barge will be used for some sort of retail effort, possibly to promote Google Glass.

Despite this official confirmation from the company, the Google X barges continue to be held under a considerable amount of secrecy. The buildings are said to be made from shipping containers, which would make construction, dismantling and transport of the structures relatively simple, and the barge itself could easily be floated to other locations as another transportation option.
