Pebble reveals iOS 7 notification updates, new SDK with more APIs

updated 02:03 pm EST, Wed November 6, 2013

Smart watch app fully integrates with Notification Center

Pebble has made a number of announcements about its Kickstarter-funded smart watch, for both iOS and Android app developers. The new iOS app introduces full integration with the Notification Center, while version 2.0 of the software development kit adds four new APIs, allowing app creators to do more with the smart watch.

The iOS 7 integration lets the Pebble display any Banner notification enabled in the Notification Center to appear on the Pebble watch face itself. While the update will be welcomed by iOS users, they will still have to wait for the new app to go through the App Store approval process.

The new SDK introduces a set of four new APIs. While APIs for Data Logging, Persistent Storage, and Javascript will be welcomed by developers, access to the accelerometer inside the smart watch is probably the most intriguing, as it could potentially let the Pebble act as a sleep and fitness tracker in a similar vein to the Fitbit Force and the Nike+ FuelBand SE.

Other items mentioned by the company include confirmation that apps from Yelp and Foursquare are on the way, that the device is now in stock in all colors on its website, and that customers can buy a Pebble with free worldwide courier shipping for a limited time.
