iPhone 5s, 5c push Apple over 40 percent of US smartphone sales

Android still clearly in lead

Apple and the iPhone's share of the US smartphone market increased sequentially from 39.9 percent to 40.6 percent in the September quarter, according to new comScore figures. The growth is believed to have been spurred by the release of the iPhone 5s and 5c on September 20th; although the devices would've been on sale for just 10 days in the quarter, Apple typically sees a surge of early adopters during any iPhone launch.

Android devices remained dominant during the quarter, slipping only 0.2 points to 51.8 percent. A deeper cut was experienced by BlackBerry, which saw its share fall 0.6 points to 3.8 percent. Microsoft's Windows Phone increased its share slightly, growing from 3.1 percent to 3.3. Symbian, now largely an obsolete platform, nevertheless held on to a 0.3 percent slice.
