Subscriber gains not enough to avoid $36M loss for third quarter

T-Mobile has managed to increase its customer numbers yet again, with its third-quarter results claiming another million users. Adding to the 1.1 million increase from the previous quarterly results, the carrier gained 643,000 branded postpaid subscribers, though this still didn't prevent the company from making a net loss of $36 million for the period. The total number of customers on T-Mobile is said to be more than 45 million across the entire company.

Revenues reached $6.69 billion for the quarter, up 7.4 percent from the previous quarter thanks to the inclusion of MetroPCS, though the merger with the carrier brought T-Mobile to a $7.74 billion loss for the third quarter last year. Approximately 1.5 million MetroPCS customers are now active on T-Mobile's network.

In terms of device sales, the carrier managed to shift 5.6 million smartphones in the quarter. During an earnings call, 9to5Mac reports that just 550,000 iPhones were sold in the quarter, 10 percent of the total smartphone sales figure, though this could have been higher if there were more supplies of the device. The 10 percent figure is a disappointment, as the company had revealed in the previous quarter's results that "Since the April 12th launch, iPhone sales have accounted for approximately 29 percent" of T-Mobile sales and upgrades, excluding MetroPCS.

T-Mobile predicts that it will gain between 1.6 and 1.8 million customers in the next quarter, up from its earlier guidance of 1.0 to 1.2 million.
