Philips adds BR30 Downlights to Hue range, shows Disney StoryLight

updated 07:50 am EST, Tue November 5, 2013

Hue BR30 offers 630 lumens of light, larger size

Philips has added to its range of app-controlled light bulbs by introducing two new intelligent light sources. The Hue BR30 Downlights are designed to be used as spotlights and to highlight individual features, while a partnership with Disney has led to the StoryLight, which alters ambient lighting when used with a corresponding ebook app.

The Hue BR30 Downlights, available in a three-bulb starter pack with the Hue Bridge according to The Next Web, offers similar smartphone-based controls to earlier models. Larger than the original, the BR30s offer an improved 630 lumens per bulb, and a lengthy 15,000-hour life span per bulb.

The StoryLight is meant to act as a nightlight for children, one which can automatically change color when specific points are reached in a compatible Disney app, such as dimming when the ebook describes a dark area like a cave.

The Hue BR30 is available from today, and will cost $59 per bulb or $199 for a three-bulb pack with a Hue Bridge for connecting to the home network. The Disney StoryLight has yet to be launched.

I'd rather they make some lights that are smaller rather than going bigger. The only applications at my house for coloured lights are all older fixtures with smaller, lower watt bulbs. In fact this is how most folks use coloured lights. I don't know any individual that's going to buy coloured floodlights for their home.
