Nintendo bringing Wii Mini to United States in mid-November for $99

updated 01:06 pm EST, Mon November 4, 2013

Bundle includes console, Wii Remote Plus, Nunchuk, Mario Kart Wii

Nintendo is bringing the Wii Mini to the United States, a year after it first went on sale in Canada, and after a European release. Effectively a stripped-down version of the Wii, the Wii Mini will be going on sale later this month for $100, making it the second re-modelled console the company is launching in the US, after the Nintendo 2DS.

At a base level, the Wii Mini is capable of playing Wii Mini games, and is supplied with a Wii Remote Plus, a nunchuk controller, and a copy of Mario Kart Wii, according to Polygon. While it keeps the core functionality, it is unable to access the Internet, does not have an SD card slot, and has just one USB port on the back, with the losses allowing Nintendo to lower the price when compared to the standard Wii.

The release of the Will Mini could financially help the company, as Nintendo continues to struggle in encouraging gamers to buy the Wii U, the company's current flagship. While the original Wii sold more than 100 million units, the updated console has generally failed to get close, with its seven-year-old predecessor still managing to outsell it by more than half a million units in the last fiscal year. The company has since ceased shipments of the Wii to Japan and Europe, though it has advised that it will still be available to buy in the US over the holiday season.
