Samsung to release clamshell phone with Android

Samsung has officially announced an Android-powered device that retains the clamshell form factor that defined a previous era of mobile phone design. SamMobile noted on Sunday the emergence of the W2014, which Samsung revealed at China Telecom's "Heart of the World" charity concert. Despite its old-school look, the device will not be cheap; Samsung's listed price for the W2014 is about $1,600.

The W2014 sports two displays, similar to the Galaxy Golden, another flip phone Samsung released earlier this year. Those displays both measure at 3.7-inches and have Super AMOLED technology, though they only output at a resolution of 800x400. Inside, the W2014 has 2GB of RAM and a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor running Android 4.3.

For storage, the W2014 has 32GB of flash memory, which users can expand via microSD. The flip phone also packs a 13MP main camera and a 2MP front-facing camera. A 1,900mAh battery powers the device, and that component is also removable. Samsung has also built in dual-SIM connectivity.

While its all-touchscreen Galaxy line of Android devices remain its bestselling handsets, Samsung has continued to manufacture flip phones. The older form factor retains a sizable following, even though the general trend in mobile devices is toward designs like the iPhone. The last several years have seen Samsung pushing out at least one Android-powered clamshell device every few months, with the Galaxy Golden and the dual-screened W999 being among those.
