Google adds in-depth photo editing tool to Android KitKat

Multiple filters, image effects include fine level of user control

Android 4.4 will ship with a non-destructive photo editor, as part of its gallery. The new editor will allow devices running KitKat to make a number of adjustments to an image taken by the device, including a number of effects and filters typically associated with desktop image editing software or editing apps, without making any permanent changes to the original image.

Demonstrated by Google employee Nicholas Roard, the editor offers some Instagram-style filters such as "Vintage" and "Bleach," with users able to zoom in to sections and also compare the image before or after the effect is applied. Options to crop, straighten, rotate, and mirror the image are shown in the video, with the level of each able to be finely adjusted. This even goes as far as allowing effects to be applied to just a single part of the picture.

The reveal of the new tool comes shortly after the company showed off new image and video tools for Google+, with the KitKat-based app providing a far greater level of control over the final appearance of an image than the social network is currently able to offer.
