Amazon introduces pre-release Kindle e-book sales, discount program

updated 01:16 pm EDT, Fri November 1, 2013

Selected Kindle books to be sold cheaply before being officially released

Not content with just launching its Kindle MatchBook program in the United States, Amazon is now offering two more e-book services to its customers. Kindle Countdown Deals will offer Kindle titles at a discounted rate for a limited time, while Kindle First will let customers read specific titles before they are released for general purchase.

For Kindle First, editors at Amazon publishing will select four titles being released in the future, with customers able to select just one from the selection for $1.99, though Amazon Prime members will be able to download one selection at no charge. The current selections, set for release in December, include titles by Gloria Gaynor, J.R. Rain, and Connie Brockway, with new selections being made on a monthly basis.

The Kindle Countdown Deals allows any publisher, including authors using Kindle Direct Publishing, to put one or more e-books on sale at a discount for a limited period of time. Authors and publishers can choose to discount a Kindle-exclusive title for between one hour and seven days, but the discount itself must be at least $1 off the regular price. Customers will see a countdown clock next to the title on Amazon's US and UK stores, with discounted books also being listed on a dedicated webpage.
