CBS: Google barge has 'invite-only' store, party deck; no data center

updated 12:35 pm EDT, Fri November 1, 2013

Building reportedly constructed of shipping containers

Google's barge in San Francisco Bay reportedly will be limited to exclusive "invitation only" retail space, without including the rumored data center, unnamed sources have confirmed to CBS. Visitors are said to be treated to luxury showrooms on three lower levels, while the top layer will serve as a dedicated "party deck" with bars and lounge areas.

The report, which was spotted by 9to5Google, notes that the building is modularly constructed from 40-foot shipping containers, which can be theoretically disassembled and put on ships, trains or trucks for transportation to other areas, though it is unclear if Google has such plans.

Google is said to be attempting to keep the project secret as part of the company's Google X division, which has been credited with kicking off development behind Project Glass and driverless cars. Previous reports suggest the barge will primarily serve as a promotion for Google Glass.

Construction is proceeding in a location near Treasure Island, however the barge is rumored to be headed to Fort Mason when completed.
