2.0 software gets tag-based browser, new audio engine

Native Instruments has released two new products, Maschine 2.0 and Maschine Studio. The first is an update of the company's beatmaking software, incorporating a new audio engine with support for multi-core processors, sidechaining, and unlimited groups and insert effects. The user interface has simultaneously been redesigned to improve control and offer better visual feedback.

A new mixer displays things like groups, modular routing, and aux sends in a single view, and a tag-based browser makes it easier to locate sounds by name, attribute, or image. An added pluginstrip gives each instrument and effect its own layout, and the app's library has been extended to include things like five drum synths and over 8GB of samples. An upgraded sampler incorporates a new plugin view, zero-crossing detection, and overlapping slices.

Maschine Studio is a new performance controller that comes bundled with Maschine 2.0. It combines sequencer and sampler functions, along with a dedicated levels section, and a new edit section featuring a jog wheel. Two color displays offer overview and precision views of ongoing work.

The Studio package costs $999. If a person already has an earlier Maschine controller, the Maschine 2.0 software is available as $99 upgrade. Alternately, people can get it with a Maschine or Maschine Mikro controller; customers who bought either peripheral between October 1st and November 1st are eligible for a free v2.0 app download.
