Verizon GS4 owners first to get new Gear compatibility
Galaxy S4 owners with Verizon as a carrier should begin receiving a software update today that will enable their devices to work with Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch. The update, which installs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, will be rolling out to other device owners and other carrier customers over the coming weeks. Samsung will eventually roll out Gear compatibility to many of the higher-end Galaxy devices it has released over the last two years.
Among the devices known to be scheduled for an update are the Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III. Those devices, along with the Galaxy S4, will see an Android 4.3 update that brings Gear access and the Premium Suite features that Samsung introduced with the S4. The update will also be pushed to the Galaxy S4 mini and the Galaxy Mega, but it is unclear whether those will receive a full update to Android 4.3 or just a software patch that adds Gear compatibility.
Samsung has promised expanded Gear compatibility since introducing its smartwatch earlier this year. An apparent timeline for the rollout of Android 4.3 and Gear compatibility emerged last week in the form of a leaked internal document from Best Buy. That document, though, accurately predicted when Samsung would begin pushing the update to device owners.
