iPhone 5c seeing most traction in US, data suggests

The iPhone 5s represents about 3.8 percent of active iPhones worldwide, according to new tracking data from Localytics. The iPhone 5c holds a share of just 1.7 percent; the most popular model at the moment remains the iPhone 5, sitting at 39.8 percent. The 4S is at 32.9 percent, while the three-year-old iPhone 4 is at 20.2.

Breaking data down by country, Localytics notes that the US is the closest to having an even ratio of 5s/5c owners, although the 5s is still dominant there. Japan has the highest penetration of 5s users at just under 8 percent; Germany, meanwhile, has the lowest number of 5c buyers, below 1 percent. Despite being a country the 5c is nominally aimed at, China is similarly skewed towards the 5s.

Although Apple has invested significant resources in marketing the 5c, the Localytics figures appear to back numerous reports that the 5s is vastly outstripping it. Whereas the 5s remains in tight supply from Apple, the 5c is often readily available. The 5c is effectively a repackaged 5, however, whereas the 5s has a faster processor, a better camera, and Touch ID.
