Apple educational sales topped $1 billion in Q4, says Cook

iPad said to control overwhelming number of educational tablet sales

During its fiscal fourth quarter, Apple's educational sales topped $1 billion in revenue, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook. The executive made the comments during the company's official results call. He also claimed that the iPad represents 94 percent of all educational tablet sales, though the source of that data was unmentioned.

A number of schools worldwide have adopted the iPad as a replacement for textbooks and/or as a way of doing coursework. Some deployments have gone badly however, particularly in Los Angeles. Costs have soared, and worries about broken security restrictions led the LA Unified School District to ban students from taking iPads home. Some schools went to the extent of confiscating tablets until restrictions could be reimposed.
