Google boosting Glass production for second pilot offering [u]

Device still not available at retail until some time in 2014

[Updated with Google's relaunch of Explorer program] According to sources close to Google, the search engine giant is planning a significant increase in the amount of Google Glass wearable computing devices being manufactured. The speedier production is expected to make tens of thousands of the device in the coming months, peaking during the end of the holiday season. Widespread release is still not expected until next year.

Earlier this summer, Google claimed to be in the process of testing "other ways of expanding the program so that additional Explorers can join." Google is in the midst of a Glass Roadshow, demonstrating the device in a series of US cities.

It is unknown what process Google will put in place for the expansion of the pilot program for the device. The $1,500 price tag isn't expected to change for the second round of availability.

Update: First-round participants in the Explorer program are receiving emails, inviting them to select up to three friends to purchase one of the newly available Google Glass units. A linktextGoogle blog post notes that "over the next few weeks, all Explorers will have the opportunity to invite three friends to join the program. They'll be able to buy Glass online and can have it shipped to their home, office, treehouse or igloo. We're counting on you to get Glass to the people you think will make great Explorers. More Explorers means more feedback, and more feedback means better Glass."
