Built-in Twitter in Windows Phone causing excess data usage

Twitter profile image redownloads fault in Windows Phone

A feature in Windows Phone is causing device owners to unexpectedly use high amounts of data, which could be potentially expensive for some phone users. An issue in the operating system's Twitter integration has devices frequently redownloading profile images from the service, an issue that Microsoft has been quick to confirm exists.

The Verge spotted and reported the fault last week, where the People hub in Windows Phone was found to use over 300MB of mobile data and over 3GB of Wi-Fi data in under a week, with the problem occurring regardless of whether the People hub is used or not, and the data level varying based on the number of people followed on Twitter.

Microsoft is working on a fix for the issue, and has already made a change that will only synchronize Twitter accounts once per day as a temporary measure. It is believed that changes in Twitter's server infrastructure has caused the issue, making it harder for Microsoft to fix, though this may pass once Twitter's server migration completes in the next few weeks.

Users are advised to track data usage in the Windows Phone Data Sense application, or alternatively removing the Twitter account from Windows Phone will solve the problem, if more drastically.
