Apple Stores begin receiving space gray first-gen iPad minis

Shade likely easier for Apple suppliers to produce

Apple Stores are beginning to receive "space gray" models of the first-generation iPad mini, according to AppleInsider. Although Apple is preparing to launch a second-gen Mini next month, the first-gen tablet is being kept on sale at a lower price. Like some other Apple products, though, the company has chosen to swap out black options with space gray.

The reason for the shift is unclear, but may be related to the difficulty of painting devices black. Silver and even gold are both easier colors for Apple suppliers to produce, which may have led Apple to the conclusion that black wasn't worth the effort. The change also has the advantage of distinguishing the latest models of Apple products from previous ones.
