First Tizen 10.1-inch tablet for developers launches in Japan

Quad-core 1.4GHz ARM processor in Tizen tablet for developers

The first tablet running the Linux-based Tizen operating system has launched in Japan, though as a developer focused offering. The Tizen Build Kit from Systena not only offers a development tools and manuals for the operating system, as well as consulting services for development on the platform, but also a 10.1-inch tablet with Tizen 2.1 pre-installed.

The large 1920x1200-resolution screen is backed by a quad-core ARM Cortex A9-based processor clocked at 1.4GHz, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth 3.0, a microSD card slot for storage expansion, and front and rear cameras are also included in the tablet, according to Liliputing, and though a price for the entire package has not been revealed, it is thought to be high considering the consulting services aspect.

Samsung and Intel, among others, have worked on Tizen for a number of years now, and while competing fledgling operating systems have launched devices, such as the Firefox OS smartphone range, there have been little in the way of major public sightings of Tizen. Samsung has said it is preparing to put Tizen to work in televisions and smartphones in 2014, and has also been caught running on a Samsung Galaxy S 4, but other than the $4 million Tizen App Challenge, supporters of Tizen have kept relatively quiet.
