updated 12:25 pm EDT, Fri October 25, 2013

Dock being sold in limited numbers before wider availability in 2014

Microsoft has started selling a docking station for the Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2, with sales said to be in limited quantities before wider availability next year. The dock's appearance is accompanied by Microsoft demonstrating one of its recently-announced Surface covers, one which is dedicated to music creation and playback.

The Docking Station is designed to let a user to place a Surface Pro with keyboard cover inside it, offering more ports to use. A high-speed USB 3.0 port, three USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, audio in and out jacks, and a display port are included in the dock, which also charges the Surface Pro at the same time. ZDNet is not sure how much stock of the $199 dock Microsoft will be offering to users, but it has confirmed with readers that dock orders are being shipped and delivered fairly rapidly.

Videos for the Surface Music Kit were released on the Surface YouTube Channel, as part of Microsoft's Surface Remix Project promotion. The kit itself is effectively a highly-specialized touch cover with light-up buttons, a group of eight control buttons, three sliders, and a 16-segment section that can be used for tapping notes or as a virtual drum. Microsoft has yet to launch the Surface Music Kit, but it will come with a partner app that will install automatically as soon as the cover is attached to a Surface.
