BlackBerry Messenger hits 10M downloads within 24 hours of launch

updated 05:38 am EDT, Wed October 23, 2013

Majority of BBM downloads on iOS, users still waiting for access

BlackBerry Messenger has been downloaded more than 10 million times in its first 24 hours of availability. The app for Android and iOS, free on both platforms, is said by the company to be the top free app in more than 75 countries, including the US, UK, and Canada, which BlackBerry calls one of the "best single-day openings for a mobile app to date."

Though BlackBerry does not advise on the split between iOS and Android downloads, Google Play lists the install base of the app as somewhere between 1 million and 5 million, suggesting that there are more downloads on iOS. At the time of writing, Google Play listing a score of 4.2 out of five, with nearly 80,000 out of almost 118,000 reviews opting for the top store. The App Store shows a score of four out of five in the US from 3,300 reviews, though the UK rates it at three out of five after 2,850 reviews, and the average after 1,275 reviews in Canada rests at 3.5 stars.

Though it has achieved a high number of downloads in a short space of time, it does not directly reflect users of the service itself. After the failed first attempt at rolling out the app, BlackBerry has introduced a queuing system in order to avoid swamping the servers. While some users have gained access, there are reports of others still waiting to gain entry.
