Galaxy Gear smart watch to work with five more Galaxy smartphones
Samsung will be bringing Galaxy Gear compatibility to more devices than previously thought. The manufacturer will not only allow the Galaxy S 4, Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note II, and Note III to communicate with the smart watch via a scheduled Android 4.3 update, but also adding devices to the compatibility list through a smaller software update.
The Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy S4 Mega 5.8, Galaxy Mega 6.3, and the Galaxy S4 Zoom will receive a "separate software update," which suggests it will not be through Android 4.3, starting from the end of October, though exact roll-out dates will vary between countries and carriers. The update for Android Jelly Bean has already started shipping on the Galaxy S 4, with the S III and Note 2 expecting it towards the end of this month. The Galaxy Note 3 ships with Android 4.3 onboard.
The Galaxy Gear smart watch is capable of displaying notifications and controlling a nearby smartphone using its 1.63-inch AMOLED touchscreen. Housing a 1.9-megapixel camera, it connects over Bluetooth 4.0 and is able to capture stills or video, which can be transferred to the host device or uploaded to social networking sites. The Galaxy Gear is priced at $300.
