Aereo launches TV streaming beta service on Android

Aereo manages to hit Android launch date

Aereo has launched an Android app connecting users on that platform to its television streaming service. The Aereo beta app saw release on Google's Play Store on Wednesday, giving access to the features iOS users have enjoyed for some time, but with more capabilities due to the fact that it is a native app on Google's platform. The app is not currently compatible with all Android devices, with units such as the Galaxy Note 2 unable to access it. It is also available only for users in cities where Aereo currently has rebroadcasting operations set up.

Aereo relies on an array of microantennas in order to capture and rebroadcast television signals to subscribers. Those subscribers to the service pay $8 per month to be able to access Aereo content, and they can access DVR functions for an additional fee. On the iOS version of the service, users must access Aereo's web portal through a browser. The Android version, though, has its own app due to Google's looser restrictions on content in its Play Store.

Aereo was supposed to launch in Chicago earlier this year, but it ran into problems with its beta site. The site will go live in Detroit on October 28. It is also live in New York City, Boston, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, and Salt Lake City.

Aereo is making its service available for free for one month to new users. At the end of a one-month period, users will be required to either cancel their subscription or accept the $8 per month charge on their credit cards.

Aereo is available as a free download from Google's Play Store. The 3.4MB download requires a device running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean or higher.
