Nokia details new WP8 apps, Refocus PureView app, RAW support

updated 09:58 am EDT, Tue October 22, 2013

Refocus app allows for Lytro-style post-shot refocusing of image

A number of software updates for Windows Phone and Lumia devices have been announced at Nokia's media event earlier today. Apps such as Vine and Flipboard for Windows Phone were demonstrated running on Windows Phone, while a number of photography related updates for PureView devices were also revealed.

Flipboard will be making its appearance on the Lumia 2520 first, before reaching other Windows Phone 8 devices in the following weeks. Vine was shown to run similarly to the existing mobile apps on other platforms complete with Windows Phone styling, though an availability date was not revealed. Other apps coming soon to the platform according to Nokia Conversations include Instagram, Line, the note-taking app Papyrus, Temple Run 2, and TuneIn.

The Lumia 1020 and the newly-announced Lumia 1520 will have support for RAW image files, a feature usually associated with DSLRs and high-end digital cameras. The RAW support will allow photographers to take a shot without the compression found in JPEG images. At the same time, The Verge reports that Nokia is launching a Lytro-style app for its PureView device line. The Refocus app will allow users to change the focus of an image after it has been taken, by taking multiple images and analyzing the scenes to create the new refocused photograph. It is unclear if it will be made available to non-PureView devices in the future.
