Microsoft pulls Windows RT 8.1 update due to issue

Citing an unspecified issue, Microsoft has pulled the Windows 8.1 update for Windows RT from the Windows Store. Microsoft confirmed the update's removal in a post to the Microsoft Community support boards. The software giant assures Windows RT users that the removal is only temporary, and that it will provide updates as they become available.

"Microsoft is investigating a situation," the post reads, "affecting a limited number of users updating their Windows RT devices to Windows RT 8.1. As a result, we have temporarily removed the Windows RT 8.1 update from the Windows Store. We are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience. We will provide updates as they become available."

The post gives no further details on the nature of the issue that caused the update's removal.

Windows RT is Microsoft's attempt to establish a foothold in the market for mobile devices running on power-sipping ARM processors. So far, the platform, which doesn't run legacy Windows applications, has fizzled, with multiple manufacturers canceling devices that were supposed to run the platform due to lackluster consumer interest.

The Windows 8.1 update is meant to spark interest in Windows on the whole, which has seen decreased consumer adoption due to the rise of smartphones and tablets running iOS or Android. Among other improvements, the update brings back a form of the Start button, which had disappeared with the launch of Windows 8. The absence of the Start button drew many complaints from those who did adopt Windows 8, as they were unsatisfied and many times confused by the new touch-centric Modern interface the operating system sports.
