Trademark filings hint at possible Chrome OS-powered devices from LG

LG said to work on three Chrome OS devices

South Korean tech giant LG appears ready to launch a line of computing products that run Google's Chrome OS. TMWatch on Monday reported on a number of new Australian trademark filings by LG, all of which contain the word Chrome. From the names of the devices, it would appear that LG will be rolling out at least two Chrome OS-powered desktops.

The Australian trademark fillings, dated October 16, cover technology devices known as the "ChromeOne," "ChromeDesk," and "ChromeStation." They fall under the same technology class as laptops, mobile phones, and tablet computers.

All three trademark applications have been "Taken For Examination" by Australian regulators. Observers note that other trademark applications registered on that day are at an earlier examination point known as "Indexing Approved." Some suppose that LG's applications may have been fast-tracked in order to get approval in time for a forthcoming Google event.

In releasing Chrome OS-powered devices, LG would be joining manufacturers such as HP, Samsung, Acer, Lenovo, and others. The Google-built, browser-based operating system allows manufacturers to release low-cost hardware without paying the royalties for a platform like Microsoft's Windows. Many manufacturers have found that to be an attractive aspect of Chrome OS, and the platform has seen increased success in recent months.

LG and Google also collaborate on the Nexus program. For the second year in a row, Google is thought to have partnered with LG on a Nexus phone, which will run a pure, unskinned version of Android. That device will also likely see release this week at Google's media event.
