Fifth-gen iPad seen shrinking in size, weight

Apple will indeed launch a thinner 9.7-inch iPad and an iPad mini with a Retina display at this Tuesday's press event, according to the Wall Street Journal. The paper cites sources in Apple's supply chain. While the claim itself isn't new, the Journal's story does back recent rumors, while discounting earlier ones that Apple would hold off on upgrading the Mini to Retina technology due to supply problems. The Mini could, however, still be in short supply.

The fifth-generation 9.7-inch iPad is expected to use GF2 thin-film technology to help make it thinner and lighter. The biggest external changes, though, should include the adoption of a Mini-style back and narrower side bezels. Previous rumors have suggested that other upgrades will include an A7 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a Touch ID sensor. The Mini is forecast to get a Touch ID sensor, and possibly even the A7, but only 1GB of RAM.
