Apple shows off first gold iPhone 5s commercial

updated 11:45 pm EDT, Sun October 20, 2013

Metal Mastered shows gold iPhone for first time on TV

Apple has unveiled the first of its television ads focusing on the highly demanded gold iPhone 5s variant. The video gives a stylish look at the golden iPhone, and it is titled "Metal Mastered." A blurb at the end of the commercial even notes the demand, saying that the gold variant is "Subject to availability."

The new video comes just days after Apple published its first magazine ads for its high-end iPhone. Those ads also focused on the gold model.

The gold variant sold out faster than other models when the new iPhones launched. Just minutes after the devices became available for order, shipping times for the gold units fell to 7-10 business days. Later, ship times were changed to a vague "October." Ship times are now more definite, with the gold model and other units shipping within 2-3 weeks.

When the gold unit sold out, many of those who had secured one capitalized on their purchases, turning around and selling them on eBay for thousands of dollars in some cases. The appearance of the gold model marks the first time that Apple has had more than two color variants available of its bestselling smartphone.

I wonder why they even bothered. They should have just paid Conan and used his stuff. Gold is best!

An advertisement for the gold iPhone 5s is a bit like gilding a lily. Given how well it's selling, advertising isn't likely to have much impact. It's a bit like crying "Fire" as a panicked crowd flees a burning building.

It amazes me that the same company that came up with the gold iPhone 5s also came up with those dreadful pastels for the 5c.
