eBay recruits Apple e-commerce head R.J. Pittman as new CPO

updated 01:11 pm EDT, Thu October 17, 2013

Was responsible for Apple's online sales platforms

eBay has hired on Apple e-commerce head R.J. Pittman as its new chief product officer and senior VP, according to an official statement. The executive will report directly to eBay president Devin Wenig. While at Apple, Pittman was "responsible for worldwide design, product management, and e-commerce innovation," including "growing the iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Mac e-commerce businesses via the web, mobile commerce, and contact center," according to his LinkedIn profile.

Prior to that job, Pittman was a product manager at Google. His experience could prove extremely beneficial to eBay. The hiring also represents one of the rare recent instances in which a prominent Apple executive has been lured away by another company; perhaps the best known example is Ron Johnson, who became the CEO of JC Penney in November 2011, but was fired from that company in April this year. Johnson has been credited with much of the success of Apple's retail chain.
