Panasonic launches 16MP Lumix GM1 mirrorless Micro Four Thirds camera

updated 05:07 am EDT, Thu October 17, 2013

Maximum 40fps burst mode, ISO 25,600 in compact retro Lumix GM1

Panasonic has added another retro-styled compact camera to its Lumix line, in the form of the Lumix GM1. The mirrorless Micro Four Thirds camera sports a 16-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor with Venus Engine image processing, which offers a maximum ISO of 25,600, shutter speeds of between 60 seconds and 1/16,000th of a second, and claims of sharp images in low-light situations.

Video can be captured at 1920x1080 at 60i and 50i in AVCHD and MP4, with full-time AF and tracking AF available in recording too. Burst mode shots hit five frames per second with the mechanical shutter, with the electronic shutter reaching 40 frames per second in some modes, and though it will only record seven images in burst when taking RAW images, it will run continuously when it is dealing just with JPEG files, while its autofocus extends to low-light, pinpoint, and one-shot AF modes.

On the back is a three-inch 1,036K-dot touchscreen display that can be used to set the focus, though its Wi-Fi connection allows it to be remotely controlled by a smartphone or tablet using its mobile app. A built-in flash, compatibility with the Lumix G lens range, and a number of additional grips are also touted.

Panasonic plans to ship the Lumix GM1 in November with a 12-32mm kit lens for $750.
