Adidas reveals smartwatch designed for runners with GPS, heart monitor

Fitness smartwatch designed as standalone device, tracks workouts

Adidas has introduced a new smartwatch that it says is designed for runners. The watch, announced just one day after Nike revealed its updated FuelBand SE, is a standalone device that includes an integrated GPS and heart rate sensor, which it combines with movement sensors to monitor the wearer's training session.

Though it is seemingly able to offer much of what a fitness tracker is able to do, it will not be a device that is tethered to a smartphone running an app. "We're not trying to make a smartwatch, per se, but the smartest running watch," said head of Adidas Interactive Paul Gaudio, according to SlashGear. Despite it not being designed to provide notifications from a smartphone, it will still connect to other devices over Bluetooth, allowing it to play music or push training-related audio notifications to paired wireless headphones. It will also synchronize with Adidas' miCoach fitness cloud, and is able to store a number of premade fitness routines from the web-based service.

While it is confirmed to have an aluminum, magnesium, and glass construction, a water-resistant construction, Wi-Fi, and a touchscreen interface, Adidas has declined to provide much more in the way of details for the smartwatch.

Adidas will be putting the smartwatch on sale from November 1st, at a cost of $399.
